Substance Abuse—The Hidden Epidemic

If you have employees you have a drug problem.  Collateral damage to the individual and to society at large is much larger in cases of substance abuse than any single disease category.   Oregon has seen a rise of over 30% in positive drug screens in 2005; 6.9 % tested positive in employment related drug screens.  Marijuana remains the most frequently detected drug, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine.  The good news is nationally, the percentage of positive drug tests has declined significantly, from 13.6% in 1988 to 4.5 % in 2004.

Connecting with Employers

Efforts to reduce the nation’s substance abuse problem cannot succeed without employer participation because most substance abusers are employees. 

According to the US Dept. of Labor study in 2003, three-fourths (76%) of illicit drug users are employed, as are at least four of every five-binge alcohol users (81%).

We have been quick to identify the drug problem in America with our screening programs, but have not offered workable solutions for managing the care of those that turn up positive.  That is until now. 

In the past we relied heavily on the gold standard for the rehabilitation industry, which were the residential drug treatment centers.  These hard to schedule intensive programs have proven costly ($7,000 or more for a four week stay), and are more often than not excluded from traditional health plan coverage.

Voluntary group programs like AA, Alcoholic Anonymous or NA, Narcotics Anonymous are popular with participants but lack proper supervision, and provide no reliable mechanism to accurately assess and document individual progress.   So what do you do when you are committed to helping a loyal employee who has struck out?

Drug & Alcohol Recovery Clinics

Our drug assessment and recovery program begins with an initial evaluation by a nationally certified biofeedback practitioner.  This is performed on a mobile basis, either on-site or off-site and involves the placement of computer limb leads and a head harness on each client.   One-on-one weekly sessions runs 75 minutes long and continue for five consecutive weeks.  Quantum biofeedback practitioners monitor clinical progress each week and make treatment adjustments as required.    Experience has shown most clients in this program will benefit from a 10-week long clinic rehabilitation course.   We recommend employees who start the recovery clinic program to continue working at their jobs throughout the treatment period.   All clinic encounters are performed privately and all documentation remains strictly confidential.  Each of our Quantum practitioners operates as independent contractors.
